Clear Water Walleye Report
The bite on the big, deep, clear-water lakes has been phenomenal this past week. Water temperatures have been averaging in the low to mid-60s, and anglers are finding excellent success targeting weed-related walleyes.
One highlight this week was Kayli Buffington landing her new personal-best 27-inch trophy walleye.
The most productive presentation continues to be a 3/16 oz green jig head paired with a Kalin’s Jerk Minnow in a natural perch pattern. An aggressive snap followed by a strict three-second pause has been triggering hard strikes from early summer walleyes.
Looking ahead, the weed bite should remain strong, although some fish may begin transitioning toward secondary offshore structures if water temperatures remain consistent.
Flowage Update
Flowage water temperatures are warming rapidly and are expected to reach the low to mid-70s this week.
Anglers targeting walleyes and crappies should focus on main lake humps and points in the 15-20 foot range.
Nightcrawlers and leeches are becoming increasingly productive. Casting crawlers on jigs and fishing leeches under slip bobbers remains one of the best approaches for summer walleyes right now.
Bluegill Report
Bluegills are wrapping up their spawn and beginning their move away from shallow bedding areas.
Look for fish on shallow wood flats in the flowages and along the first deep weed edges adjacent to spawning areas on clear lakes.
A 1/32 oz jig tipped with a piece of crawler or a small leech suspended beneath a slip bobber continues to produce excellent results.
Crappie Report
Crappies have largely vacated the shallows and are settling into summer patterns.
Focus on fish suspended over 12-18 feet of water, around sharp drop-offs, river channel bends, and deeper basin edges.
Electronics are extremely helpful for locating schools relating to young-of-the-year baitfish. Once located, small jig heads tipped with paddle-tail plastics or live crappie minnows are producing consistent catches.
Final Thoughts
Fishing conditions across the Tomahawk area continue to improve as water temperatures climb and fish settle into early summer patterns.
